Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get started?
Review the information and requirements noted below to ensure you satisfy baseline requirements and qualifiers. You must be registered and have a “PLUS Account” on KansasWorks.com. You may then submit your name, phone number and e-mail on a sign-up sheet at the front desk for a follow-up interview. A Career Advisor will contact you to discuss your individual needs and set up a preliminary interview to discuss next steps.
What are the basic eligibility requirements or qualifications?
Our training resources are reserved for Kansas residents living in Johnson, Leavenworth or Wyandotte counties. Household income (gross earnings) is a factor in qualifying for training assistance. Individuals laid-off from a Kansas business located in one of these three counties may also qualify. You can expect to supply documentation to verify the following information if we are able to proceed with a training enrollment (Additional documentation may be required based on individual circumstances):
- U.S. Citizenship or Work Authorization
- Date of Birth
- Social Security Number
- Selective Service Registration (males only)
- Current Address
- Layoff Letter or Notice (with lay-off date)
- Individual and/or Family Income (gross earnings) for the past six (6) months
Are there any testing requirements?
Yes. Access to training is driven by individual needs and circumstances as determined by structured interviews, assessments and testing. Our assessment tests help to summarize and certify your knowledge, skills and abilities, and allow you to explore career options. Assessment results also help us to develop an appropriate career action plan, to include whether or not training is necessary for you to achieve your career goals.
How long does it take for training to be approved?
It is important to understand that training opportunities are not simply approved upon request. The need for training is determined by interview and assessment results. If interview and assessment results reveal a need for training, the timeline from approval of training to when you actually might start a training activity varies widely based on individual needs and circumstances. In general terms, we cannot approve training that has already begun, training that starts in less than ten (10) days, or training that starts in more than sixty (60) days. Also note that our services are offered on a first come, first serve basis, as long as funding exists.
What training program(s) might you pay for?
We only can consider financing training that meets the following criteria:
- Training opportunities may be in a traditional classroom setting, or may involve hands-on, on-the-job training, or both.
- The training provider and their program must appear on the Kansas approved training provider list. Visit www.kansasworks.com (click “Resources,” then “Training Providers,” then “Training Provider Search,” to review the list of approved programs). No exceptions.
- Training must be within our high-growth and high-demand target industries, which are: Health Care, Transportation and Warehousing, Manufacturing, Professional Scientific and Technical Services, Construction, or Bioscience/Biotechnology.
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program is an equal opportunity program, and auxiliary aids are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
